One Year Today

Today marks one year since we, here in the UK, were informed by our Prime Minister that we were going into lockdown for the first time, as this pandemic started taking hold across the globe.

I watched the broadcast that night, fearful and anxious, knowing we were witnessing history and wondering what on earth the future was going to bring us. It was scary.

Today, one year on…and we are still in lockdown! We have of course had periods of ‘freedom’, but our lives have been severely restricted for the best part of this year to try to get a handle on the situation.

It’s been tough, there’s no doubt about that. I wrote about the effects of this pandemic in a previous post and those effects continue.

As we start to emerge from a very dark period of this pandemic here, we watch parts of Europe struggling with another wave and it makes me wonder when it will ever end.

There is light at the end of the tunnel with the rollout of the vaccines. It’s not an instant fix, but it will hopefully go a very long way to freeing all of us to live our lives in a more normal fashion in the not too distant future.

In some ways I can’t believe that it’s only been a year, it feels so much longer than that! Life has changed dramatically during that time, how can it only be a year?!

Today marks one milestone. My thoughts are with all of those who have lost loved ones during this period.

I hope that the year ahead of us is brighter and when we get to 23rd March 2022, we will find ourselves in a very different and much better place.

  1. I was just reading the news today that we also here in Germany extended the Lockdown until 18th of April. Undeniably true, but yes, we are still living in restrictions because of the Virus, it never felt the same…(not yet!)
Sending you warm cheers… you know you are not alone, we are all in this together.

    1. Thank you, it’s important to remember we are not alone isn’t it! I’m really sorry that your lockdown is being extended, it’s really tough isn’t it. Thank you for the encouraging words though! I hope that we are all through this in the not too distant future. Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment 🙂

  2. It’s been a year like no other hasn’t it and to be honest things don’t look great for the year ahead either. Great to see restrictions lifting slowly but with the issues other countries are facing I can’t see the world returning to the old ‘normal’. Fingers crossed things ease and improve with each passing week.

    1. I completely agree Jonno. We are in a different place now with the vaccines and everything but things are still precarious. i can’t help but be cautious and just adopt a one day at a time attitude at the moment!

This particular sentence resonates with me.There are days when I can hardly remember what life was like a year ago.

Our little family of 4 (husband, and young adult daughters) were gathered around the table yesterday and were just commenting that this really is an unprecedented time when a single ill has plagued us across the globe. The ramifications are still staggering to us.

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I have been trying to take each day as it comes, but when you stop and think what has actually happened over the past year it is unbelievable isn’t it. It seems incomprehensible that we had the habits we used to have – like shaking hands and sharing an office with so many people! 🙂 I never ever thought I would be living through something like this. And yet here we, dealing with it in the best way each of us can. It does highlight to me just how adaptable we are too, that life has continued, albeit it in a very unfamiliar and restricted fashion. I hope things do start to get better soon. Thank you so much for reading and for commenting. I hope you and your family stay safe and healthy.

      1. Thank you so much for the well-wishes.
We are settling down to a new-ish normal – we decided not to wait as we didn’t know how long this would be going on for. We figured that we would just take things as they come.

        Keep safe and well!

  4. I keep hoping for the day when we figure out a better way to deal with a pandemic rather than lock downs. They are so hard on everyone, and it’s going to take years for us to fully recover when they finally end.

    1. I know, I hope so too, but after the year we’ve all had I just can’t help but wonder what is around the next corner. Trying to take it all one day at a time at the moment. I hope you’ve had a good week and have a lovely weekend!

  5. Aren’t you tired of reading about it, hon? I know I am! Desperately trying to move on and face life with positivity, but that isn’t easy when you’re in a different country than your youngsters. 😦

    1. Yes, I am very tired of it all, it’s taking it’s toll for sure now. It’s so difficult being in a different country from your loved ones, I really do hope you are all able to see each other again very soon. Fingers crossed we are moving in the right direction towards that now.
